WCC Meets Tonight

Dear Westwood Community Council Members and other Westwood Friends:

As we begin a new year, this is a friendly reminder that our next meeting of the Westwood Community Council is tonight –

Tuesday, January 17, 2023

7:00 p.m.

Belmont Village Westwood

Town Hall community room (first floor)

10475 Wilshire Boulevard

Los Angeles, CA  90024

Please find attached the agenda and supporting materials.

In addition to receiving an update from our LAPD Senior Lead Officer James Allen on crime statistics and trends in Westwood, We will be joined by several representatives of our newly elected officials.

Joining us for the first time will be Jarrett Thompson, recently appointed as Transportation Deputy for our new CD 5 Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky.  Jarrett previously served with great success as a Field Deputy for CD5, and has more than four years of experience as a Field Deputy for Councilmember Koretz.  Jarrett will update us on the latest news from Katy’s office.

In other business, we will also welcome a special guest speaker, Lindsay Sturman, who will present the Livable Communities Initiative to our Council.  Lindsay is the Founder and Co-Author of this proposal to holistically address Los Angeles’ affordable housing crisis and climate crisis, by placing “gentle density” — three or four stories of housing above ground floor retail or office space — along our existing commercial corridors.  Westwood Boulevard, Pico Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, and possibly parts of Westwood Village, are considered possible candidates for such a concept.  If you wish to acquaint yourself with this proposal in advance, you may visit www.livablecommunitiesinitiative.com

We also will consider a timely proposal from our Board member Roozbeh Farahanipour on behalf of the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to ask Councilwoman Yaroslavsky, the Los Angeles City Council, and Mayor Bass to dedicate “Women. Life. Freedom. Square – Honoring the Memory of Mahsa Amini” at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Rochester Avenue.

This would be located one block from the existing Persian Square, and is a response to the global movement for women’s freedom and women’s rights that was sparked by the brutal killing in September of an innocent 22-year old woman, Mahsa Amini, at the hands of the Iranian government’s religious Morality Police and the highly repressive Iranian regime.  This proposal already has gained much traction in our Westwood community and beyond, and Roozbeh is now seeking our support from the Westwood Community Council.

We also have three Consent items on our Consent Calendar, three motions from the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils (WRAC).  The links to the background information and Council Files for these three items are contained in the attached agenda.

Finally, as a reminder, attached is a copy of our WCC policy on Voluntary Dues.  Any Voluntary Dues contributions you wish to make for 2023 may be sent directly to our Treasurer, Dr. Jerry Brown, at the address listed on the attached notice.

Thanks once again to our member Chris Schroeder and his wonderful Belmont team for graciously hosting our WCC meetings and to his Chef for providing delicious snacks and beverages.

Please note that Belmont has relaxed their COVID-19 protocols.  Proof of vaccination is no longer required, and masks are optional inside Town Hall, as long as we keep the doors to Town Hall closed during the meeting.  Masks must still be worn in the PUBLIC areas of Belmont, including the lobby.

If you have not already done so, WCC members and invited guests are asked to kindly RSVP to confirm whether we can expect your attendance at our January 17th meeting.
I look forward to seeing you tonight at Belmont Village.
Thank you for your continued service to our Westwood community!

With kind regards,

For the Westwood Community Council….Steve SannSTEVEN D. SANN
